Sheridan sits in the Goose Creek valley on the east side of the Bighorn Mountains in northern Wyoming. The town was platted in 1882 and named for Civil War General Philip Sheridan. Ranching drove the early economy, and the Eaton family established the country's first dude ranch at nearby Wolf in 1904. The Sheridan Inn, built in 1893 and long associated with Buffalo Bill Cody who auditioned performers on its front porch, still operates as a hotel and restaurant.
The Sheridan WYO Rodeo, held every July since 1931, remains a working rodeo rather than a tourist spectacle, drawing competitors from the regional circuit.
