Evanston sits about four miles east of the Utah state line along Interstate 80 and was established in 1868 as a Union Pacific tie camp during the construction of the transcontinental railroad. The town took its name from James A. Evans, a surveyor for the line. The Union Pacific roundhouse and machine shops, built here in the 1870s, operated as a division point for decades, and several structures from that complex survive today.
Bear River State Park on the east side of town preserves a short stretch of riparian land along the Bear River, which rises in the Uinta Mountains and eventually flows into the Great Salt Lake without ever reaching the sea. Historic Depot Square anchors downtown, with a restored 1900 depot and period commercial buildings. The Wyoming State Hospital, established in 1887 as the territorial insane asylum, still operates on the south side of Evanston as the state's primary psychiatric facility.
