Watertown: Rock River Kindergarten History

Margarethe Meyer Schurz, a German immigrant and the wife of US Senator Carl Schurz, established the kindergarten in 1856 based on Friedrich Fröbel's educational model. The Watertown Octagon House, built in 1854 by John Richards, is a five-story octagon-shaped brick residence that reflects the nineteenth-century interest in eight-sided architecture.
