Weirton Heights: Ridge Neighborhood Above the Mill
Weirton Heights is a residential district set on the ridge above the main valley of Weirton in the northern panhandle. Most of the housing stock dates to the mid-twentieth century, built during the peak employment years of Weirton Steel when the mill ran three shifts along the Ohio River flats below. The neighborhood straddles the county line between Hancock and Brooke, a legacy of the city's consolidation in 1947.
Weir High School, the public secondary school serving much of the area, sits on the ridge and draws students from both counties. The Weirton Steel employee stock ownership plan of 1984 briefly made the mill the largest worker-owned enterprise in the United States, though subsequent restructurings and a 2003 bankruptcy erased much of the arrangement. What remains of the mill still operates on a reduced footprint under Cleveland-Cliffs ownership.
