Saint Albans: Coal River Confluence
Saint Albans sits at the confluence of the Coal and Kanawha Rivers in Kanawha County, about eleven miles west of Charleston. The town was incorporated in 1870 and grew as a railroad junction and residential community for workers at the Kanawha Valley chemical plants. Much of the housing stock dates to the 1920s through the 1950s, and the downtown along MacCorkle Avenue retains a concentration of early twentieth century commercial buildings.
The Coal River flows from the south and meets the Kanawha at the eastern edge of the city, creating the point for which an earlier settlement name, "Kanawha Station," was later replaced. The Roosevelt-era Coal River Lock and Dam system, now removed, once supported commercial barge traffic upstream to the southern coalfields.
