Oak Hill: New River Gorge Coal Country
Oak Hill occupies a ridge in Fayette County above the New River Gorge. The city was incorporated in 1895 and grew as a service center for the surrounding coal operations at the height of the southern West Virginia coalfields. Country music singer Hank Williams Sr. died in the back of his Cadillac near Oak Hill on January 1, 1953, en route to a scheduled New Year's Day performance in Canton, Ohio; the driver discovered him at a service station in town, and the West Virginia medical examiner performed the autopsy.
The New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, designated in 2020, draws whitewater rafters, rock climbers, and hikers to the gorge below. The New River Gorge Bridge, completed in 1977 and 876 feet above the river, carries U.S. Route 19 across the gorge. Bridge Day, held the third Saturday of October, closes the bridge for BASE jumping and rappelling and draws tens of thousands of spectators. The Plateau Medical Center serves the immediate Oak Hill area.
