Nitro: World War I Planned Town
Nitro was founded in 1917 by the U.S. government as a planned community around Explosives Plant C, built to manufacture smokeless powder for the First World War. The city's name comes from nitrocellulose, the primary output. Construction proceeded on a crash schedule; within months the town housed thousands of workers in standardized frame buildings laid out on a regular grid. The armistice of November 1918 came before the plant reached full production, and the site was sold to private operators in the 1920s.
Fike Chemical Company and later other chemical operators used portions of the original World War I site for decades. Some parcels became EPA Superfund sites due to contamination from later industrial activity. The city itself was formally incorporated in 1932 and straddles the Kanawha River in Kanawha and Putnam Counties. The Tri-State Racetrack and Gaming Center, now Mardi Gras Casino and Resort in neighboring Cross Lanes, draws regional visitors.
