Fairmont sits in Marion County along the Monongahela River, roughly halfway between Morgantown and Clarksburg. Fairmont State University, founded in 1865 as a teacher training institution, enrolls roughly 4,000 students on a hillside campus above the river. The I-79 Technology Park north of downtown houses NASA's Independent Verification and Validation Facility, established in 1993 to independently review flight software for crewed and uncrewed missions. Pierpont Community and Technical College shares parts of the Fairmont State campus.
