Beckley is the seat of Raleigh County and the largest city in the southern coalfields region. The town was founded in 1838 by Alfred Beckley, son of General John Beckley, the first Clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives. Coal drove nearly all local economic activity from the late nineteenth century through the peak production years of the mid-twentieth century, and the surrounding counties of Raleigh, Fayette, and Wyoming produced some of the largest bituminous tonnages in Appalachia.
