University Place: Pierce County Suburban Community
University Place occupies the west side of the peninsula between Chambers Bay and the Narrows, just west of Tacoma. The population is approximately 35,000. The city incorporated in 1995 from what had been unincorporated Pierce County. The name comes from a failed plan in the 1890s to build a Methodist university on the site, though the institution never materialized.
Chambers Bay Golf Course, built on a former gravel mine along the Puget Sound shore, hosted the 2015 U.S. Open. The course is links-style with no trees and significant elevation changes descending toward the sound. The Cirque Park and the Chambers Creek Regional Park adjacent to the course provide trails, a dog park, and public access to the shoreline.
The University Place Town Center around Bridgeport Way provides the commercial core of the city. Curtis High School and the Curtis Viking athletic program serve the local student population.
