Orchards is a census-designated place in Clark County, situated east of the Vancouver city limits. The community name dates to the area's early-twentieth-century identity as a fruit-growing district, particularly for apples, pears, and berries. The soils on the terrace north of the Columbia River proved suitable for orchard cultivation, and the name stuck even as the orchards gradually gave way to suburban development over the decades following World War II.
The CDP is now a mix of residential neighborhoods, commercial corridors along Fourth Plain Boulevard and Northeast 117th Avenue, and light industrial uses. Population is approximately 24,000. The Evergreen Public Schools district serves most of Orchards, with Mountain View High School and Evergreen High School as assigned high schools depending on location.
Interstate 205 forms the western boundary of the CDP, providing access south to the Portland airport and the interstate bridge crossing into Oregon. Highway 500 runs through the community. Like much of Clark County, Orchards has seen steady population growth driven by workers employed in Portland who choose Washington residence for its lack of a state income tax.
