Camano: An Island in Puget Sound Reached by Bridge
Camano Island sits in Puget Sound in Island County, separated from the Washington mainland by the narrow Davis Slough. Unlike Whidbey Island to the west, Camano is connected to the mainland by a highway bridge at the north end, making it the only Puget Sound island reachable by car without a ferry. State Route 532 runs from Stanwood across the bridge and onto the island.
The Camano census-designated place covers a portion of the island's population and includes several of its larger neighborhoods, though the island as a whole is largely unincorporated. Residential development is distributed along the coastline and throughout the interior, with forest cover still occupying much of the island.
Camano Island State Park, a 134-acre park on the southwest side of the island, provides camping, beach access, and forested trails. Cama Beach State Park, a historic fishing resort converted to a state park in 2008, preserves 33 rustic cabins from the 1930s and 1940s that are rented to visitors. The park's former fishing lodge houses a historical museum documenting the island's earlier identity as a resort destination.
The Stanwood-Camano School District serves public schools on the island and in Stanwood on the mainland, with Stanwood High School as the comprehensive high school. Island County covers law enforcement and other services in unincorporated portions of the island.
