Suffolk became the largest independent city in Virginia by land area in 1974, when the former city of Suffolk merged with Nansemond County. The city lies within the naval weapons ecosystem of Hampton Roads. NATO Allied Command Transformation has its Maritime Interdiction Operational Training Center outside the city, and the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division has a Combat Direction Systems Activity facility here. Nansemond River flows through the western portion of the city, feeding into the James River.
