Petersburg: Civil War Siege Ground on the Appomattox River
Petersburg sits on the Appomattox River about 25 miles south of Richmond. The city was the site of the ten-month Siege of Petersburg from June 1864 through April 1865, one of the longest sustained military engagements of the Civil War. Union forces under General Grant eventually broke through the Confederate defensive line at the Battle of Five Forks, leading directly to the fall of Richmond and the Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House nine days later. The Battle of the Crater, in which Union troops detonated explosives beneath Confederate lines and attacked through the resulting crater, took place here in July 1864.
Petersburg National Battlefield preserves much of the siege ground and the Crater site, administered by the National Park Service. The city's historic districts, including Old Towne Petersburg, retain antebellum and Victorian-era commercial and residential architecture. Petersburg served as a major tobacco manufacturing and railroad center through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Fort Lee, now known as Fort Gregg-Adams, is the Army's logistical training center and a major military employer in the Petersburg region. Central State Hospital, one of Virginia's state psychiatric facilities, operates on the west side of the city.
