Manassas grew around a railroad junction that became strategically important during the Civil War. The First Battle of Manassas on July 21, 1861, was the first major land engagement of the war, and the Second Battle of Manassas a year later in August 1862 was among the largest. Manassas National Battlefield Park preserves the ground where both battles were fought, just outside the city on the Bull Run watershed.
