Manassas: Twin Civil War Battlefields and a Prince William Railroad Town
Manassas grew around a railroad junction that became strategically important during the Civil War. The First Battle of Manassas on July 21, 1861, was the first major land engagement of the war, and the Second Battle of Manassas a year later in August 1862 was among the largest. Manassas National Battlefield Park preserves the ground where both battles were fought, just outside the city on the Bull Run watershed. Stone House, Henry House Hill, and the Stone Bridge remain visible landmarks from the battles.
The city of Manassas itself is an independent city surrounded by but not part of Prince William County. Old Town Manassas, centered on the historic train depot, retains a compact street grid with restaurants, small retail, and the Manassas Museum. VRE and Amtrak serve the station with commuter and long-distance rail. Manassas Regional Airport on the city's west side is one of the busiest general aviation airports in Virginia.
The city hosts several federal contractor offices, a Micron memory chip fabrication plant that expanded significantly in the 2020s, and substantial light manufacturing. It shares a school system with neighboring Manassas Park, another small independent city.
