Herndon is an incorporated town in Fairfax County, near Dulles International Airport along the Dulles Toll Road. The town was established in 1879 along the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad, which operated through the area until 1968. The W&OD right-of-way is now the W&OD Trail, a 45-mile paved rail-trail running from Alexandria to Purcellville, and passes directly through downtown Herndon.
