South Burlington: Airport, Retail, and the Edge of the Metro
South Burlington separated from the town of Burlington in 1865 and was reorganized as a city in 1971. It occupies the land immediately south and east of Burlington proper and hosts Burlington International Airport despite the name of the facility. With roughly 20,000 residents it is the second-largest municipality in Vermont and continues to grow faster than the core city.
The commercial corridor along Shelburne Road and Williston Road carries much of the region's big-box retail and fast-food traffic. Interstate 89 cuts through the northern portion of the city, and exit 14 serves as the main connector between the airport, the UVM campus, and downtown Burlington. The city also contains large residential neighborhoods developed in the postwar decades, along with newer planned developments such as South Village.
