Essex Junction: From IBM Campus to GlobalFoundries
Essex Junction separated from the town of Essex and incorporated as a city in its own right in 2022, making it one of the newest municipalities in Vermont. With roughly 10,000 residents it occupies the southwestern corner of the former town and is the site of the Champlain Valley Exposition, the annual agricultural fair held each September. The Amtrak Vermonter stops at the Essex Junction station, the Burlington-area stop on the Washington-St. Albans corridor.
The semiconductor plant on the east side of the city was built by IBM in 1957 and at its peak employed more than 8,000 workers. GlobalFoundries acquired the facility in 2015 and continues to operate it as a chip fabrication site. The plant remains one of the largest private employers in Vermont and specializes in older-node analog and RF chips for automotive and industrial markets.
