Tooele sits about 35 miles southwest of Salt Lake City on the western side of the Oquirrh Mountains, in a valley that extends west toward the Great Salt Lake Desert. The city has served as Tooele County's seat since the county's organization in 1850. Population stands at roughly 36,000.
The Tooele Army Depot, established in 1942, occupies more than 23,000 acres south of the city and stores ammunition and military equipment. The former Deseret Chemical Depot, which operated adjacent to the Tooele Army Depot, housed the United States' largest stockpile of chemical weapons for decades. Disposal operations at the Tooele Chemical Agent Disposal Facility destroyed the entire stockpile by 2012, and the depot was formally closed. The Utah Motorsports Campus, a former Miller Motorsports Park, operates a multi-configuration road course about 15 miles east of the city.
Tooele High School and Stansbury High School, part of the Tooele County School District, serve the local population. The city's Main Street retains pioneer-era commercial architecture alongside newer development on Utah State Route 36.
