Spanish Fork lies in south-central Utah Valley, about ten miles south of Provo along Interstate 15. The area was named for the Spanish Fork River, which the Dominguez-Escalante expedition of 1776 crossed in their attempt to find a route from New Mexico to California. Mormon settlement began in 1851, and the city grew steadily as an agricultural center through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
