Riverton: The Southwest Salt Lake Valley Edge
Riverton occupies the southwestern corner of the Salt Lake Valley, bordered by South Jordan to the north, Bluffdale to the south, and the Jordan River to the east. Settled in 1865 by Mormon farmers who used the river for irrigation, the city retained an agricultural character well into the late twentieth century before residential subdivision transformed its landscape. The current population stands at roughly 45,000.
The Riverton Utah Temple was announced in 2021 and is under construction. The Mountain View Corridor, a state highway that was extended through Riverton in the 2010s, connects the west side of the Salt Lake Valley with southern Utah County and has driven substantial commercial development.
Old Dome Meeting House, a reconstructed pioneer-era building in the Riverton Historic Park, preserves elements of the city's early Mormon settlement. The annual Riverton Town Days in June is one of the largest community celebrations in southern Salt Lake County.
