Oquirrh: A Census-Designated Place at the Base of the Oquirrh Mountains
Oquirrh is a census-designated place in southwestern Salt Lake County, sitting at the eastern foot of the Oquirrh Mountains. The CDP was established by the U.S. Census Bureau to count the population of unincorporated bench land that had not been annexed into South Jordan, West Jordan, or Riverton. The Oquirrh range gives the area its name, derived from a Goshute word reportedly meaning "wooded mountain" or "shining mountain," depending on the source.
The Kennecott Utah Copper Bingham Canyon Mine, operated by Rio Tinto, sits on the western side of the Oquirrhs, directly opposite the CDP. The open-pit mine is visible from satellite and is one of the largest man-made excavations on earth, measuring more than two and a half miles wide and nearly a mile deep. Copper has been extracted at Bingham continuously since 1906. A 2013 landslide removed a significant portion of the pit wall in one of the largest non-volcanic landslides in North American history.
The Daybreak master-planned community in South Jordan borders Oquirrh to the north and east. The Mountain View Corridor, a limited-access highway completed in phases through the 2010s, runs along the western edge and connects this side of the Salt Lake Valley to I-15 at the Point of the Mountain. Herriman and Riverton sit to the south and east, with the Oquirrh Shadow area filling the remaining residential lots.
