Canyon Rim: An East Bench CDP in Salt Lake County
Canyon Rim is a census-designated place on the east bench of the Salt Lake Valley, bounded roughly by Holladay to the south, Millcreek to the west, and the mouth of Parleys Canyon to the north. The area sits at an elevation of about 4,600 feet and takes its name from its position along the rim where the bench falls off toward the central valley. The terrain is shaped by alluvial fans and terraces left by Lake Bonneville, with the streets following the natural grade.
Residential development in Canyon Rim dates mostly to the postwar period, with ranch-style and split-level homes from the 1950s and 1960s making up much of the housing stock. Olympus High School serves the area and is operated by the Granite School District. The city of Millcreek incorporated in 2016 from formerly unincorporated Salt Lake County land, but Canyon Rim itself remained an unincorporated CDP, meaning county government provides municipal-type services through the Unified Fire Authority and Unified Police Department.
Parleys Canyon, which opens immediately north of Canyon Rim, carries Interstate 80 east toward Park City, Heber, and ultimately the Wyoming border. The canyon is named for Parley P. Pratt, an early LDS apostle who charted the first road through it in 1848. Emigration Canyon, which also opens onto the east bench nearby, was the path taken by the original Mormon pioneer company in 1847.
