Victoria is the seat of Victoria County in South Texas, about halfway between San Antonio, Houston, and Corpus Christi, with approximately 68,000 residents. The city was founded in 1824 by Martín De León as one of the four original Mexican colonies in what was then the state of Coahuila y Tejas. It is the only one of the four settlements whose original Mexican land grant survived the Texas Revolution with most of its residents intact, and the De León family names still mark streets, plazas, and schools.
The Guadalupe River flows through the city, and the Victoria Ballistic Park preserves a portion of the old De León site. Victoria College, a community college founded in 1925, and the University of Houston-Victoria, established in 1973, operate adjacent campuses downtown. The Riverside Park complex along the Guadalupe River provides green space in the city core.
Victoria's position at the intersection of U.S. 59, U.S. 77, U.S. 87, and U.S. 59/Interstate 69 has made it a regional commercial center for a wide ranching and agricultural area. The Caterpillar plant northeast of the city, opened in 2012, manufactures hydraulic excavators for North American distribution.
