San Angelo: Concho River, Fort Concho, and Goodfellow AFB
San Angelo occupies Tom Green County in West Central Texas at the confluence of the three branches of the Concho River, with approximately 98,000 residents. The city grew up opposite Fort Concho, a U.S. Army post established in 1867 to protect frontier settlements during the Indian Wars. The fort operated until 1889, and much of its original limestone architecture has been preserved as the Fort Concho National Historic Landmark.
Goodfellow Air Force Base, established in 1941 on the southeast side of the city, serves as the primary training installation for Air Force intelligence specialists and also hosts training for firefighters across the armed services. The base trains personnel from all five branches of the U.S. military.
Angelo State University, founded in 1928 as San Angelo Junior College and now part of the Texas Tech University System, enrolls around 10,500 students. The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, opened in 1999, is one of the few museums in the region with a major regional art collection. Concho Pearls, formed inside the Tampico pearly mussel native to the Concho River system, are unique to the area and have been harvested commercially at various points in the city's history.
