Lancaster is one of the oldest settlements in the Dallas area, founded in 1844 by A. Bledsoe and other pioneers who established the town just south of the Trinity River floodplain. For several decades in the nineteenth century Lancaster rivaled Dallas as a commercial center, with a cotton trade and rail connections that made it an important stop on the Houston and Texas Central Railway. Dallas eventually eclipsed it, but the Lancaster courthouse square retains its nineteenth-century scale and layout.
The town square, rebuilt in stages after a devastating tornado in 1994 destroyed much of the historic fabric, preserves several original buildings and reconstructions that match the original scale. The tornado was rated F4 and killed three people while destroying or damaging more than 700 buildings, including most of the downtown commercial structures.
Lancaster's population grew from roughly 9,000 in 1980 to over 40,000 by the mid-2020s. The city is majority African American, with significant Hispanic and Anglo minorities, and the demographic composition has shifted over the past 40 years as suburban settlement patterns changed. Interstate 35E runs along the west side of the city, and Lancaster Regional Airport on the east side handles general aviation traffic.
