Killeen occupies central Bell County and holds approximately 156,000 residents. The city was founded in 1882 as a stop on the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway and named for a railroad executive. For most of its early history, Killeen was a small agricultural community of a few thousand people. That changed in 1942 when the U.S. Army established Camp Hood, later Fort Hood, on 200,000 acres immediately west of the town.
Fort Hood was renamed Fort Cavazos in May 2023 to honor Gen. Richard E. Cavazos, the first Hispanic four-star general in U.S. Army history, as part of the Congressional renaming of bases originally named for Confederate officers. The installation remains the largest active-duty armor post in the United States and home to the III Armored Corps and the 1st Cavalry Division. Military personnel, civilian employees, and contractors tied to the base dominate the Killeen economy.
Central Texas College, founded in 1965 largely to serve the military population, enrolls students across multiple campuses and has one of the largest military affiliate enrollments of any community college system in the country. The Stillhouse Hollow Lake reservoir, south of the city, provides recreational water use.
