DeSoto occupies a position in southern Dallas County bordered by Dallas, Duncanville, Lancaster, and Glenn Heights. The city covers about 22 square miles. It was originally settled in the 1840s as Stewartsville, renamed DeSoto in 1881 for Thomas Stewart DeSoto, an early settler and physician. Incorporation followed in 1949, during the initial wave of postwar suburban formation.
The city grew quickly in the 1980s and 1990s as the southern Metroplex suburbs expanded. DeSoto's population crossed 30,000 by 1990 and passed 55,000 by the mid-2020s. Like Lancaster and Cedar Hill, DeSoto has become one of the most demographically diverse cities in the Metroplex, with a majority African American population and substantial Hispanic and Anglo minorities.
Interstate 35E cuts through the west side of DeSoto, and Beltline Road (Loop 9/U.S. 67) runs east-west through the center. The Hampton Road and Wintergreen commercial corridors serve as the main retail spines. DeSoto High School competes at the 6A level in Texas football and basketball and has produced multiple state championships.
