Brownsville occupies the southernmost point of Texas, sitting in Cameron County across the Rio Grande from Matamoros in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. The community was founded in 1848 adjacent to Fort Brown, which had served as the staging point for U.S. forces under Zachary Taylor during the opening operations of the Mexican-American War in 1846. SpaceX's Starbase facility at Boca Chica, roughly 20 miles east of downtown Brownsville, has operated as the company's test and launch site for the Super Heavy booster and Starship vehicle since 2014. The launch and test activities have drawn international media attention and shifted parts of the local economy toward aerospace contracting and specialized services. The adjacent Boca Chica State Park and the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge border the facility.
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, established in 2013 through the consolidation of UT-Brownsville and UT-Pan American, maintains its Brownsville campus on the former Fort Brown grounds. The Gladys Porter Zoo, opened in 1971 along the resaca system that winds through the city, houses more than 1,500 animals.
