Bedford: Mid-Cities Suburb in the Heart of Tarrant County
Bedford is wedged between Hurst to the west, Euless to the east, and Colleyville to the north. The city covers about 10 square miles along the State Highway 183 corridor. It grew from a small farming community established in the 1860s, when settlers from Bedford, Tennessee moved west and named the new settlement after their former home. The population stayed below 2,000 until the 1960s.
The completion of State Highway 121 and the opening of DFW Airport in 1974 transformed Bedford from a rural outpost into a suburban community. Population crossed 40,000 by 1990 and has stayed relatively flat since, as most available land within city limits has been developed. The Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District, which serves all three Mid-Cities municipalities, is one of the larger suburban districts in Tarrant County.
Boys Ranch Park preserves 85 acres of original prairie and cross-timbers habitat on the eastern side of the city. The land was donated to the city in the 1960s by Gene and Jo Harris Boyd, who had operated a ranch on the property for decades. Much of the acreage has been maintained in a natural state rather than converted to traditional park facilities.
