Atascocita is an unincorporated community in Harris County, north of Houston along FM 1960 and the shores of Lake Houston, with approximately 66,000 residents. The name comes from the Spanish "atascosa," meaning "boggy," and references the wet terrain the early Spanish colonists encountered. The area remained rural well into the 20th century, and much of the current residential development dates from the 1970s onward.
Because Atascocita is unincorporated, it does not have its own municipal government. Governance functions run through Harris County, several municipal utility districts, and Humble Independent School District. The lack of incorporation has been debated periodically but has not produced formal action toward city status.
Lake Houston, a 12,000-acre reservoir formed in 1954 by damming the San Jacinto River, borders the eastern edge of Atascocita and supplies water to the City of Houston. Lake Houston Wilderness Park, Atascocita Boat Ramp, and several private lakefront developments provide recreational access. The community primarily functions as a residential area for people commuting to Houston, The Woodlands, and Humble.
