Allen is a Collin County city immediately north of Plano and south of McKinney, with approximately 111,000 residents. The community was founded in 1876 along the Houston and Texas Central Railway and named for Ebenezer Allen, a Texas attorney general who promoted railroad construction in the region. The city remained a small rural community for most of its history, with fewer than 2,000 residents as late as 1960.
Suburban expansion reached Allen in the 1980s and accelerated sharply through the 1990s and 2000s, with population growing from 18,000 in 1990 to over 100,000 by 2015. Eagle Stadium, the Allen High School football venue that opened in 2012 at a cost of $60 million, drew national attention for its scale and is widely reported as the most expensive high school stadium ever built in the United States at the time of its opening.
The Allen Americans minor league hockey team competes in the ECHL at Credit Union of Texas Event Center, and the Watters Creek at Montgomery Farm development combines retail, apartments, and green space on the southwest side. Allen ISD serves the city.
