Union City is the seat of Obion County in the far northwest corner of Tennessee, near the Kentucky border and not far from the Mississippi River. The town was founded in 1854 as a rail junction and has a population of around 10,800. Union City sits about 30 miles south of the Kentucky line and about 150 miles northeast of Memphis.

Reelfoot Lake, an unusual natural lake formed by the 1811 and 1812 New Madrid earthquakes, lies about 15 miles west of Union City. The earthquakes caused the Mississippi River to temporarily flow backward and reshaped the landscape, creating a lake across what had been forested land. Cypress trees that were submerged at the formation still stand in the lake, and Reelfoot is a notable destination for eagle viewing, fishing, and birdwatching. The Reelfoot Lake State Park preserves much of the shoreline.
