Sevierville: Sevier County Seat and Dolly Parton's Hometown
Sevierville serves as the seat of Sevier County in east Tennessee, about 30 miles southeast of Knoxville and just north of Pigeon Forge, with roughly 16,000 residents. The county and city were named for John Sevier, the first governor of Tennessee. Dolly Parton was born in 1946 in a cabin on Little Pigeon River outside the city, and a statue of her stands on the lawn of the 1895 Sevier County Courthouse on Bruce Street.
Sevierville's tourist economy draws from its proximity to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park via US 441, which passes through Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg to the south. The city itself houses more than 200 retail outlets at the Tanger Outlets center along Winfield Dunn Parkway. Forbidden Caverns, a commercial cave tour site, opened to the public in 1967.
The Sevier County Courthouse, completed in 1895 in Romanesque Revival style, remains in active use. Sevierville Memorial Park, along the Little Pigeon River, provides the city's principal recreational green space.
