Harrison is a census-designated place in Hamilton County, Tennessee, along the eastern shore of Chickamauga Lake about 12 miles northeast of downtown Chattanooga. The community is unincorporated and functions as a suburban area under Hamilton County administration. Population is around 8,900.
Chickamauga Lake, a Tennessee Valley Authority reservoir on the Tennessee River, was created in 1940 by Chickamauga Dam. The lake covers about 36,000 acres and extends for 59 miles from the dam upstream to Watts Bar Dam. The lake is a regional destination for bass fishing, particularly largemouth bass, and hosts numerous fishing tournaments annually. Harrison Bay State Park occupies a peninsula along the lake at Harrison and offers boating, camping, swimming, and a marina.
The community takes its name from the original Harrison town site, which was inundated when Chickamauga Lake filled in 1940. The older Harrison had served as county seat of Hamilton County for a period in the 19th century before that role shifted permanently to Chattanooga. The current Harrison community developed on higher ground after the lake formation displaced the original town.
Volkswagen of America's Chattanooga Assembly Plant, which produces the Atlas SUV and other vehicles, is located just west of Harrison in the Enterprise South industrial park. The plant, which opened in 2011 on land that was once part of the Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant, employs thousands and serves as a major economic anchor for the Chattanooga metropolitan area.
