Chuckey is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Greene County, located along the Nolichucky River in upper East Tennessee. The community is unincorporated and does not have a separate municipal government, functioning instead under Greene County administration. Population is around 1,100.
The Nolichucky River flows past Chuckey on its way from the Unaka Mountains to the French Broad River. The river's upper reaches above Erwin are one of the more popular whitewater paddling stretches in the southeastern United States, with the Nolichucky Gorge passing through Pisgah National Forest on the Tennessee-North Carolina border. Downstream near Chuckey the river is gentler and used for flat water recreation.
Greene County was established in 1783, one of the earliest Tennessee counties, and is named for Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene. The area was home to the short-lived State of Franklin in the 1780s, an unsuccessful attempt at statehood in the mountains before Tennessee was formed. Greeneville, the county seat, was the home of President Andrew Johnson, whose preserved home and tailor shop are National Park Service sites.
The Chuckey area is predominantly rural, with tobacco (historically) and beef cattle being the main agricultural products. The population has stayed small as larger communities like Greeneville to the west and Jonesborough in Washington County to the east absorbed most regional economic activity.
