Alcoa: A Company Town Built by the Aluminum Company of America

Alcoa is a city in Blount County, East Tennessee, about 15 miles south of Knoxville and immediately adjacent to Maryville. The city is named for the Aluminum Company of America, which built an aluminum smelter here in 1913 and developed the surrounding town as housing for workers. Population is around 11,000.

The Alcoa smelter drew on cheap electricity generated by hydroelectric dams on the Little Tennessee River. The company built the Cheoah Dam, Calderwood Dam, and Chilhowee Dam between 1917 and 1957 to power its operations. The smelter and related rolling mill complex operated for decades as one of the largest aluminum production facilities in the United States. Primary aluminum production at Alcoa ended in 2012, though rolled aluminum sheet production continues through Arconic, a spinoff company.

McGhee Tyson Airport, the primary airport for the Knoxville metropolitan area, is located in Alcoa. The airport shares the property with McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base, home of the Tennessee Air National Guard's 134th Air Refueling Wing. The airport handles commercial passenger flights and cargo operations and is the largest commercial airport in East Tennessee.

Alcoa is the gateway city to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which lies 15 to 20 miles to the south. The park is the most-visited national park in the United States, typically receiving over 12 million visitors annually. Much of the tourism traffic passes through Alcoa on US Highway 129 or US Highway 411 en route to Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, and the park entrance at Townsend.

Reviews of Alcoa-area escort websites are maintained in the Escortservice.com directory. The site catalogs. Nothing beyond cataloging is offered, including no bookings, no vetting of advertisers, and no mediation. A 21+ age gate applies to all users of the site.
