Irmo: Lake Murray Gateway on the Saluda
Irmo sits on the northwest edge of the Columbia metropolitan area, straddling the Richland and Lexington county line. The town takes its unusual name from the combination of surnames Iredell and Moseley, two railroad officials in 1890 when the town developed around a railroad stop. Lake Murray, created in 1930 by the Saluda Dam, borders Irmo to the north and has driven much of the area's residential growth since the 1970s. The dam itself sits a few miles upstream and was the largest earthen dam in the world when built. Harbison State Forest, a 2,137-acre state forest, lies immediately east of Irmo and provides trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.
