Forest Acres is a small incorporated city entirely surrounded by the city of Columbia in Richland County. The city was incorporated in 1935 as a residential community developed on former farmland between Columbia and Fort Jackson. It has remained a predominantly residential enclave with its own police department, despite being completely enveloped by Columbia's city limits. Population has stayed roughly stable at around 10,000 for decades.
Richland Mall, which operated in Forest Acres from 1961 until the early 2000s, was one of the first enclosed shopping malls in South Carolina. The site was redeveloped as a mixed-use complex anchored by a Barnes and Noble after the mall closed. Forest Lake, a small reservoir on the east side of the city, gives several neighborhoods their identity.
