Clemson: Tigers, Death Valley, and the Calhoun Legacy

Clemson exists essentially because of the university that bears its name. Thomas Green Clemson, son-in-law of John C. Calhoun, willed his Fort Hill plantation to the state of South Carolina in 1888 to establish an agricultural and mechanical college. Clemson College opened in 1893, became Clemson University in 1964, and now enrolls roughly 28,000 students in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The original Fort Hill mansion survives on campus as a historic house museum.

Memorial Stadium, known as Death Valley, seats more than 81,000 people and has served as home to Clemson Tigers football since 1942. The stadium's name came from visiting Presbyterian College coach Lonnie McMillian, who said his teams had to play in a death valley. The Hill at the east end of the stadium, where players traditionally rub Howard's Rock and run down onto the field, has become one of the most recognisable entrance traditions in college football.

The town outside the campus supports a population of roughly 15,000 year-round, swelling during the academic year. Lake Hartwell, the 56,000-acre Army Corps reservoir on the Savannah River, touches the town's western edge and provides the Clemson University Rowing Team with its practice water.

Escort websites covering Clemson are reviewed and listed on Escortservice.com. The directory does not arrange appointments, verify legal status, or intercede between parties. Users must be 21 or older to access the platform.
