Bluffton: Old Town on the May River
Bluffton sits in Beaufort County along the May River, across Calibogue Sound from Hilton Head Island. The town was incorporated in 1852 on a high bluff chosen as a summer retreat by planters from nearby rice plantations. Union forces shelled and burned most of the town in June 1863 during the Civil War, destroying nearly all of its early buildings. A handful of antebellum structures survived, and the Old Town district preserves these along with reconstructions from the late 19th century.
Bluffton was one of the smallest incorporated municipalities in South Carolina until the early 2000s, when large annexations added residential developments to the south and west. The population grew from about 1,200 in 2000 to more than 15,000 by the most recent count. Much of that growth came from the Palmetto Bluff community, a planned development on 20,000 acres along the May River that includes a town center, inn, and residential lots.
