Berea grew as a mill village around the Union Bleachery, which operated on the Reedy River from 1902 until its closure in 2003. A 2003 fire destroyed the mill complex, and the site is now partly redeveloped as commercial and residential property.
The community remains unincorporated and is administered by Greenville County. Population exceeds 14,000, and the area contains residential neighborhoods alongside commercial development along U.S. Route 25 and Interstate 85.
