Beaufort, pronounced BYOO-fort to distinguish it from the North Carolina town of the same spelling, is the second-oldest European settlement in South Carolina, chartered in 1711. The Port Royal Sound, one of the deepest natural harbors on the Atlantic coast, protected the town through Spanish, French, and English colonial contests. Beaufort was captured early in the Civil War by Union forces, in November 1861, and served as a Union base for the remainder of the war, which preserved its antebellum buildings when much of coastal South Carolina was destroyed.
The Beaufort Historic District contains more than 300 properties from the 18th and 19th centuries. Robert Smalls, the enslaved man who commandeered the CSS Planter out of Charleston Harbor in 1862 and delivered it to the Union, was born in Beaufort and later represented the area in Congress. The John Mark Verdier House on Bay Street, built around 1805, hosted the Marquis de Lafayette during his 1825 tour of the United States.
Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, one of two Marine recruit training installations in the country and the only one that trains women, sits on an island connected to Beaufort by a causeway. The Naval Hospital Beaufort, operated by the Navy in support of Parris Island and the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, is also located in the area.
