Samuel Slater arrived in Pawtucket in 1789 carrying in his head the blueprints of the Arkwright water frame. For most of the twentieth century Pawtucket housed the Pawtucket Red Sox, the Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, at McCoy Stadium. The stadium hosted the longest game in professional baseball history, a 33-inning contest between the PawSox and the Rochester Red Wings that began on April 18, 1981, and resumed two months later for a single inning to determine the outcome. The PawSox departed for Worcester after the 2020 season and McCoy Stadium was slated for demolition and redevelopment.
