Pawtucket: Birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution

Samuel Slater arrived in Pawtucket in 1789 carrying in his head the blueprints of the Arkwright water frame. He had memorised them in England, where exporting either the plans or the mechanics who knew them was forbidden. With the backing of merchant Moses Brown, Slater built the first successful water-powered cotton-spinning mill in North America on the Blackstone River in 1793. Slater Mill still stands, preserved as a museum, and is widely cited as the point at which the Industrial Revolution crossed the Atlantic.

For most of the twentieth century Pawtucket housed the Pawtucket Red Sox, the Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, at McCoy Stadium. The stadium hosted the longest game in professional baseball history, a 33-inning contest between the PawSox and the Rochester Red Wings that began on April 18, 1981, and resumed two months later for a single inning to determine the outcome. The PawSox departed for Worcester after the 2020 season and McCoy Stadium was slated for demolition and redevelopment.

Pawtucket's population is approximately 71,000, making it the fourth largest city in Rhode Island. The Blackstone River cuts through its center, falling over a series of dams that once powered dozens of mills. The old downtown retains a concentration of brick mill buildings and nineteenth-century commercial structures, many now converted to apartments, studios, and office space.
