North Scituate is a village and census-designated place within the town of Scituate in the northwestern interior of Rhode Island. The town covers 54 square miles, much of it tied up in the Scituate Reservoir watershed, the primary water supply for Providence and much of the metropolitan area. The reservoir, built between 1915 and 1926, required the displacement of approximately 1,600 people and the destruction of several villages that were submerged.
Providence Water, the municipal water utility of Providence, owns and manages roughly 23 square miles around the reservoir and restricts most development to protect water quality. Recreation on the reservoir itself is prohibited, with boating, swimming, and fishing all excluded. The surrounding conservation lands are traversed by the North-South Trail, a long-distance hiking route that crosses Rhode Island from Massachusetts to the Atlantic.
The census-designated place of North Scituate had a population of about 11,000, though boundaries reflect a statistical grouping rather than a municipal one. The village retains a small commercial center at the intersection of Routes 6 and 116 with shops, restaurants, and the Scituate Town Hall.
