North Kingstown: Home of the Quonset Hut
During World War II the U.S. Navy established the Quonset Point Naval Air Station in North Kingstown. Faced with the need for prefabricated, shippable shelters that could be assembled quickly at forward bases, engineers working at Quonset developed the Quonset hut in 1941. The semicircular corrugated steel building, roughly 20 by 48 feet in its standard form, was produced in tens of thousands and deployed across the Pacific and European theaters. The name came directly from Quonset Point, which in turn derives from a Narragansett word meaning roughly "small, long place."
The air station also served as the first home of the Navy Seabees, the Construction Battalions that built airfields, ports, and roads across occupied territories during the war. The Seabees Museum at Davisville preserves this history. The base closed in 1974 but the site has been redeveloped as the Quonset Business Park, one of the largest industrial parks in southern New England.
The town's older village of Wickford, with its dense cluster of eighteenth-century houses around a protected harbor, predates the military era by two centuries. The Wickford Art Festival runs each July and draws visitors from across the region. North Kingstown has a population of approximately 28,000 and occupies roughly 58 square miles along the west shore of Narragansett Bay.
