Middletown: Between Newport and Portsmouth
Middletown occupies the center of Aquidneck Island, bordered by Newport to the south and Portsmouth to the north. The town was set off from Newport in 1743 and takes its name from that middle position. It includes Second Beach (Sachuest Beach), one of the longer ocean beaches in Rhode Island, and Third Beach on the Sakonnet River side of the island.
The Norman Bird Sanctuary, a 325-acre preserve established through the 1949 bequest of Mabel Norman Cerio, provides hiking trails across fields, forests, and distinctive puddingstone ridges known as Hanging Rock. The sanctuary is managed as a private nonprofit and open to the public.
The Newport National Golf Club and Prescott Farm, with its restored 1812 windmill, occupy large parcels in the town. Naval Station Newport extends into Middletown at its southern boundary, and much of the town's commercial activity along West Main Road serves both military families and civilian residents of Aquidneck Island.
Middletown's population is approximately 17,000. Despite the shared name, Middletown, Rhode Island, should not be confused with Middletown, Connecticut, a separate and considerably larger city on the Connecticut River.
