Central Falls covers 1.3 square miles and holds roughly 19,000 residents, giving it one of the highest population densities of any city in New England. The city was originally part of Smithfield, later separated as a village of Lincoln, and finally incorporated as its own city in 1895. Central Falls has a substantial Latino population, particularly of Colombian and Dominican origin, and the bilingual character of the city's commercial streets reflects decades of immigration. Jenks Park, in the center of the city, includes the Cogswell Tower, an 1880s structure that served as an observatory and clock tower and is now undergoing restoration.
