Willow Grove: Upper Moreland's Crossroads
Willow Grove is a census-designated place primarily within Upper Moreland Township, Montgomery County, about fifteen miles north of Philadelphia. The population of the CDP is approximately 16,000. The name derives from a nineteenth-century amusement park, Willow Grove Park, which operated at the intersection of York Road and County Line Road from 1896 until 1976. At its peak the park drew visitors from across the region and was served by the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company's trolley line.
The site of the former Willow Grove Park is now occupied by the Willow Grove Park Mall, a regional shopping center opened in 1982. Nearby, the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Willow Grove operated until its 2011 closure and is now partially redeveloped as the Horsham Air Guard Station and civilian uses. Route 611 (York Road) and Route 63 (Horsham Road) intersect in the center of the community.
Willow Grove is served by SEPTA's Warminster Regional Rail Line, which operates a station in the community with service into Center City Philadelphia. The Upper Moreland School District and the Upper Moreland Free Public Library serve the area. Residential streets feature a mix of mid-century single-family homes and twin houses.
