West Norriton is a township in Montgomery County, about 20 miles northwest of Philadelphia, adjacent to the borough of Norristown and the Schuylkill River. The population is approximately 15,800. The township was formed in 1909 when the former Norriton Township was split into East and West Norriton. Most of its residential and commercial development occurred between the 1940s and the 1970s, as the Philadelphia area's postwar suburbs expanded along Route 202 and the Germantown Pike.
Einstein Medical Center Montgomery, a major hospital operated as part of the Jefferson Health system (formerly Einstein Healthcare Network), is located in the township on West Germantown Pike. The Norriton Presbyterian Church, dating from the colonial era, and the Selma Mansion, an eighteenth-century stone farmhouse, are among the township's historic structures. The Plymouth-Whitemarsh School District and the Norristown Area School District serve different portions of the township.
West Norriton sits immediately west of Norristown and is bounded on the south by the Schuylkill River, which forms a natural boundary with Lower Providence Township and Upper Merion across the water. Route 202 cuts through the township and provides a regional connection linking the King of Prussia area to Doylestown in Bucks County. Large portions of the township are served by the Methacton School District, one of several districts operating in the area.
